Facebook

I am addicted to the Facebook.

Shut it.

You know you are too.

But lately, some things that have been happening on it have made me a little jaded.

It was so cool 2-3 years ago when everyone started using Facebook.  I had so much fun reconnecting with old high school friends.  Seeing that the really hot Senior (think Jake from Breakfast Club) is balding & uhem...larger now.  Or that the girl who had it so perfect in college has been divorced 3 times and has 6 kids.  Or seeing that the guy you predicted was going to become a rocket scientist in your yearbook, actually did become a rocket scientist. Yeppers - fun.

And it was really cool to see that twice-removed cousin and his 2nd wife and 4 kids are at Disney World right now.  Or that former co-worker from 3 jobs ago (what was the name of that company?) ate sushi in NYC for dinner.  How about that your boss's wife is getting a facial in preparation for a trip to Spain? Or that your neighbor down the street just stubbed their big toe?

All VERY important things to know.

Even better....I love the amigious status updates like...

"I can't wait for tomorrow!!"

why....come on tell me...I am dying to find out!

"Some people just don't know when to keep their mouth shut!"

Spill it sister, what did they say??

or my favorite:

"UGH!"

cause that tells me a lot.

I guess it's better than the constant complainers, "It's so HOT!" "I hate my job!!" "I am sick of......"  I don't like to hear you complaining in person, why do I want to read about it.....

At first it was fun to see that so&so's kid's made the honor roll or scored a goal at a game or got commended on the TAKS test - we are all so very proud of our kids and just want to brag..... (I do this as well) but when they start looking like this, they are getting out of hand...

"Today, Daughter X, did a front flip while holding an egg on a spoon and reciting the Declaration of Independence in less than 30 seconds!!!!!"

It's as if we are trying to outdo one another - who has the BEST child out there???

But the worst lately are the check-ins.  I don't need to know that you went to the HEB (for lemons), then Starbucks (for a Chai latte), then the post office (for stamps..duh!), then to Marshall's (to return some shoes).....seriously. I. don't. care.

Many like to check in at places all together when they do stuff - I guess to show they have a social life, so the rest of us at home can feel like losers?   Cause they weren't out at the nightclub too?  I totally used to do this...until I saw the implications first hand (and that was some ugly drama).

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate The Facebook.  I look at Facebook multiple times a day.  I still post updates. Especially if my kids do something quirky or funny.  I still post pics of the Bubba bear all the time - someone out there likes them cause I get comments on them.   And if I am "checkin in" it's cause I'm at a unique place...with my family...

Facebook isn't bad - it's just stating to make me laugh.  It's like everyone tries to "out-do" everyone else in real life already, now we have a social medium to do it on too?  It just gets to be too much.

and I'm movin on....some really cool chicks from Oklahoma taught me all about the Twitter - there's no bragging going on over there.....

Well said sister! I hate when people leave us hanging! And I also hate when people re-do status messages 2,560 times a day. It gets old.

I love this post! I couldn't agree more. JK and I have a friend that "checks us in" when we are together for GNO. I just let her do it but I don't normally do it myself. I have stalkers you know?

So, tell me more about these cool chicks from Oklahoma....

Oh my gosh I think you took the thoughts right out of my head. I love facebook but at the same time it is irritating, annoying & really stupid.

I don't tweet, honestly I've never even seen it. I think I know of those cool chicks of Oklahoma. I should ask them for a little tutorial LOL.

Ugh!!

Just kidding. Honestly, I am probably one of those bragging moms.-- What can I say?? We have gone from those "my honor roll student can beat up your honor roll student" bumper sticker parents to bragging FB parents. HA-- It's a never ending cycle.

Totally agree!! I especially hate to hear people whining on there. And, I hate to see poor grammar and spelling. It drives me batty!

Thankfully, I haven't run into too much bragging. But, I do have a lot of people hidden. :)

Dammit! You and those girls in OK just now taught me how to put fb on my phone so that I CAN check in.
Damn.
I'm never on time for anything...

I check in at places on FB so that my brother in law can see how much fun we're having without him.

:)

My biggest FB pet peeve is when people say they are so mad or whatever and then say they can't talk about it over FB...then why post it!!! I think it's taking away from us being personal so I try not to make it THE place where I solely communicate with people. Tell me how you like Twitter.

I'm not kidding, I was having the same conversation with my coworkers yesterday! I had a friend yesterday write "well, it's happening again" WHAT?? Tell us! When people wrote her asking what was happening again, she said "I'll message you". Really? If you can't tell everything, then why put it out there? Or the people that never do crap on FB except when they need prayers. Don't get me wrong, I'll add it to my prayer list, but don't have that be the only time you reach out to people. The useless check in's annoy me too.

FB gets on my nerves for a lot of reasons, honestly... BUT I'll admit, I am a girl who checks in. Not at the supermarket mind you... but cool places, like San Francisco last week. And alcatraz. Because that's fun... Oh yeah, and my husband took me to FB headquarters and i checked in there too because let's face it- the next time I'm in Silicon Valley Facebook will be dead somewhere and I will have missed that rare, once in a lifetime opportunity.

Also, I check in at our favorite restaurants because it keeps track so when my husband dips that bread in the garlic and says "we come here too much!" I can pull out my phone and say "nope! Last time we were here was 9 weeks ago- see!" :)

THIS IS HILARIOUS AND TRUE! I did a post like it a long time ago...well, sort of like it. Not as funny. LOL
I love it!
Also love Connie's comment. HAHAHA!

Funny! I read an article recently about Facebook and narcissism that was very interesting and pointed out how Facebook has allowed us to be so preoccupied with ourselves and self promotion and status. Interesting social phenomenon for sure.

I have to say I am liking Twitter alot better. It's like Facebook is high school and Twitter is for grownups.

You are spot on and I am guilty of every one of those FB "no-no's" except for check in, I don't do that.

It is an addiction that's for sure!

Facebook is the worst, I've grown to really not like it.

I enjoy checking-in from time to time, but only to tell my friends I'm doing something super awesome. In fact it's often times the only time I'll post a status update all week. I figure if people can post the same kind of status updates each day, or post pictures of their make up brushes ten times a day, I can check in somewhere once a week. ;)

That's why I love the "hide" and "unfriend" options on Facebook! :-) So glad I get to see what you and the kids are up to -- one of my favorite things about FB!

I'm totally laughing b/c I complain about these very things but you know it hasn't stopped me from checking anyway to see what everyone is up to...

how about the ones where they are rootin' on their team to win?

COME ON MAV's! Geesh..

really? Does that deserve a Facebook status update? I think sports moves a tad faster than the facebook status updates and comments can keep up with.

I am now following you because of this post. I LOVE IT!
You are spot on in all your comments about FB.
I began liking it quite a bit but something kept nagging at me over and over and I finally realized it was several of the things you speak of.
I feel like it has become a popularity contest and I notice the narcissism and self centeredness, too. I don't wish to feel this way about people but it became glaringly clear just what they were about. Some things I would rather not know, to be honest.
I still love them and I like FB to a point but your post is well taken so spot on!!
Great job and best wishes from Indianapolis!!! Hugs
