Smell the Ocean Air

As many of you know, we took a little trip a few weeks ago to celebrate my brother's wedding in Washington.  Growing up, I lived in Washington for a few years as a sullen, bratty tween (and no mom, you may not comment).  We lived on the Pacific Coast in a little town called Ocean Shores.  I would fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean, we were that close.  On the weekends, my parents would drag me through the Olympic Rainforest searching for hidden waterfalls, hiking up Mt. Rainier to play in the snow in August, or take us on a ferry ride over to Seattle but never take me to a mall (gasp...the horror, I know!).  As much as I acted like I was "bored", I loved every minute of it.

So as we planned our trip to the PNW, I was determined to "recreate" some of this fun for my family.  Unfortunately, October being one of the rainiest months, we had fewer options.  Can you believe certain parts of Mt. Rainier was "closed for the season"?  Didn't they know I was coming??  I love the rainforest, so a trip to the Olympic Peninsula was planned.

No one in my family had every seen the Pacific, so we planned a wonderful day at the beach.  If you look at the top right hand corner of this map, you can see Port Townsend, where we spent the day.  (Do you see Ocean Shores at the bottom left corner??)
We took a ferry from a town north of Seattle across the Puget Sound.  Brody especially loved this!

I think Bubba got a kick out if it too.
Port Townsend has an old fort, Fort Walton, where we climbed through this HUGE bunker used in WWII.
But mainly, we just explored the beaches.

It was a perfect day for it too - not a cloud in site.

As we took the ferry back home, I snapped this shot, my favorite from the trip.  My beloved Mt. Rainier with Seattle nestled in front.  It was the only day we could see it, so I took it in as much as I could.
It was a really incredible day to explore a new part of our country, breathe some fresh air, and spend quality time with the family.  In our hustle-bustle lives, we don't get much time for it anymore.

Wow, Becca!! That sounds like an amazing trip! Those pictures are gorgeous! I would love to visit the PNW...because of the breath-taking scenery, of course...and I would also have to make a side trip to Forks, Port Angeles, and First Beach (aka La Push). :)

Thanks for sharing the pics!

Howdy stranger. Now here's one heck of a coincidence - I discovered your blog because I have a Google alert set up to tell me whenever someone mentions "Ocean Shores". You did, and that's how I got here. (I just have to know what's going on over there, even when I'm stuck here at work.)
We're the "Seattledarlings" and if you add .com after that in your browser, you can learn a little about us too.
Love the photos of your visit - you sure saw some of the best weather this year!
Cheers!

I love the PNW. I spent 10 years in Vancouver, WA... and let me tell you, as a native SoCal girl, I was STILL reluctant when it was time to come back home. I don't think there is a prettier region in the country.
(but I'm biased.)
